Portland Pirates/Anthem Blue Cross and
Blue Shield Community Angels
Anthem Logo

The Portland Pirates would like to congratulate George Sawyer for being selected as the first ever Portland Pirates Anthem Community Angel during Game 2 of the 2010-11 Atlantic Division Semifinals between the Pirates and the Connecticut Whale.

Sawyer was nominated as a result of his countless hours of work within the cancer community, consistently paying for transportation for patients to and from treatments as well as setting up community benefit bingo's and auctions.

Pictured above is Bill Whitmore (right), Vice President of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine, who presented Sawyer with a framed Pirates jersey during the first intermission of the 2010-11 playoff game against Connecticut at the Civic Center. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will also make a donation of $500 in Sawyer's to Big Brothers Big Sister of Mid-Coast Maine.

The Anthem Community Angels program recognizes community “heroes” — people in our local community who have led, created or otherwise been instrumental in small, informal activities that make our community better. Examples are building a playground, raising money to pay for something essential that a family could not afford, involvement in youth athletics, and other commendable activities.

Nominate an Anthem Angel

Anthem Community Angels is a program that recognizes community "heroes", people in our local community who have led, created or otherwise been instrumental in small, informal activities that make our community better. Examples are building a playground, raising money to pay for something essential that a family could not afford, involvement in youth athletics, etc.

A total of four honorees will be chosen before the conclusion of the 2011-12 season. Each honoree will be recognized at a home game in an on-ice ceremony and will receive a number of prizes from Anthem and the Pirates, including a framed Pirates jersey. Anthem will also make a $500.00 donation in the honoree’s name to the non-profit of his or her choice.
