Pirates Drown River Rats in Lewiston, 6-3

BOX SCORE
Derek Whitmore scored his first goal of the season in a 6-3 win over the River Rats.

Lewiston, ME - Eleven different Pirates scored a point as the Portland Pirates won their sixth straight contest and picked up a point for the ninth straight game with a 6-3 win over the Albany River Rats. Mark Mancari extended his scoring streak to six games with a goal and an assist.

The Pirates moved their home ice advantage to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, ME. It was one of four home contests the Pirates will play outside Portland this season. The Pirates return to Lewiston on March 14th to take on the Lowell Devils. Portland will play a home game at Alfond Arena in Orono on December 9th against the Manchester Monarchs and on February 10th, the Pirates host the Albany River Rats at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY.

The River Rats struck first, as Dan LaCouture scored his first goal of the year by deflecting a point shot off the stick of Jonathan Paiement. Brett Carson picked up the other assist on the goal, which snapped a Pirates streak of 308 minutes and 30 seconds without trailing.

Portland wouldn't stay behind for long though, as Marek Zagrapan scored his first goal of the year just over six minutes later. The goal came off a centering feed from Nathan Gerbe that deflected to Zagrapan's backhand. The former first-round pick put his shot into the top shelf to tie the game. Aaron Slattengren also got an assist on the play.

Just 54 seconds later, the Pirates moved ahead as Derek Whitmore tallied his first goal of the season by putting a wrister into the top corner off a rush. Felix Schutz and Tyler Bouck earned assists on the play. Portland would only enjoy the lead for 80 seconds however, as a Nicolas Blanchard shot through a screen deflected off Jhonas Enroth's blocker and into the net. Nick Dodge and Tim Conboy got the assists, and the first period would end tied at 2.

The Pirates started the second period with an offensive burst. Mark Mancari broke a 2-2 tie as he moved in short-handed with a partial breakaway, stick-handled towards the left side of the slot and put a backhander past Daniel Manzato. Mancari's tenth goal of the season extended his point-streak to six games just 2:27 into the second period.

A mere 72 seconds later, Mathieu Darche added to the Pirates lead by jamming the puck home in front. Darche's fourth of the year came from Tim Kennedy and Mike Kostka. The fourth goal of the game spelled the end of the night for Daniel Manzato, who made 16 saves on 20 shots before being chased.

Justin Peters took over between the pipes, but didn't fare much better. After 70 seconds in net, Nathan Gerbe found a loose puck in front and deposited it into the back of the net to extend Portland’s lead to 5-2. Gerbe's eleventh of the year came unassisted. The score stayed the same through the final 15:11 of the second period, and the Pirates took a 5-2 lead into the third.

It looked like the score would stay unchanged throughout the third period, but the River Rats tried to mount a late comeback as Jerome Samson jammed home a rebound in front to cut it down to a 5-3 game with two and a half minutes left. The assists went to Dan LaCouture and former MAINEiac Stefan Chaput. But after pulling their goaltender late, the River Rats would yield an empty net goal to Nathan Gerbe. The rookie tallied a pair of goals and an assist. Marc-Andre Gragnani and Mark Mancari got the helpers on Gerbe's twelth of the season. Gerbe's empty netter left the final score 6-3.

Portland goaltender Jhonas Enroth stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced to pick up his sixth straight win. Enroth improves to 6-1-0-0. River Rats netminder Daniel Manzato stopped 16 of the 20 shots he faced before being pulled for Justin Peters. Peters stopped nine of the 10 shots that came his way throughout 35:13 of action.
