Worcester, MA –Chris Brown scored a goal just 62 seconds into the game and the Portland Pirates held the a 1-0 lead for most of the night before Worcester Sharks scored three third period goals to defeat the Portland Pirates 3-1 Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,026 at the DCU Center. The Sharks improves to 5-4-1-1 on the season while the Pirates drop to 4-4-1-0.
The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead just 1:02 into the game when Andy Miele found Chris Brown in the right faceoff circle, whose backhand shot beat Goaltender Alex Stalock. It was Brown’s third goal of the season and his second straight game with a goal.
After a scoreless 2nd period, the Sharks started the third period with a 5 on 3 power play, and they took advantage. Just 48 second into the period, Tim Kennedy skated from behind the net and found Bracken Kearns ,who fired a shot past Pirates goalie Chad Johnson. Matt Tennyson was also credited with an assist. The goal ended Johnson’s consecutive shutout streak at five periods.
The Sharks took their first lead of the game whenFreddie Hamilton’s shot off the reboundsailed over Johnson for a 2-1 lead, 8:36 into the third period. An assist was also given to James Livingston. It was Hamilton’s first professional goal.
Worcester added insurance with 38 seconds left in the game with an empty net goal scored by Jon Matsumto with the assist going to James Sheppard.
Stalock picked up his fifth straight victory for the Sharks, stopping 25 of the 26 shots he faced and improving to 5-2-1 on the year. Johnson took the loss for Portland, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced and falling to 3-4-1 on the year.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow with a quick turnaround, as they travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins.
