Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates hosted the Worcester Sharks Friday night and beat them by a score of 4-3. Portland goaltender Chad Johnson picked up his 7th win in the game, stopping 27 of 30 shots he faced.
The Sharks came out with a bang. Just 4:17 into the opening period, former Pirate Tim Kennedy got the Sharks on the board first on an aimless that found its way past Pirates goaltender Chad Johnson.Exactly halfway through the period, Matt Irwin of the Sharks was booked for a tripping penalty that sent the Pirates to the power play. Eight seconds later the Pirates would tie it up at 1, when David Rundblad took a pass from Michael Stone and put the puck over the left shoulder of Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock, setting off a cascade of teddy bears on Teddy Bear Toss night, presented by the Portland Press Herald. Rundblad’s goal was his 3rd of the year, and third in his last 3 games.
It was just over halfway through the second period when Alexandre Bolduc would break the tie. Bolduc’s goal, his team leading 12th of the year, gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead.Chris Brown would follow Bolduc’s goal with one of his own, this time on the power play for his 8th of the year. The Sharks would bite back just a couple of minutes later, as James Sheppard would score his third of the season to get Worcester within one. Just 20 seconds after the Worcestergoal, Jordan Martinook andYanni Gourdedropped the gloves. Chris Conner would then capitalize on a Bolduc pass for his 6thof the season to give the Pirates a 4-2 advantage heading into the second break.
The third period began with a Sharks goal. Just 1:51 into the period, Tim Kennedy scored his second goal of the night and his 8th of the season to get the Sharks within one. Worcester would go down fighting, as Bracken Kearns would drop the gloves with Brett Hextall for the second fight of the evening.
The Pirates improved to 9-8-1-1 on the season, dropping the Sharks to 9-8-1-1 on the season. The Pirates win tied the two teams at 20 points, good for 3rd in the Atlantic Division standings. The Pirates also finished ahead in shots by a tally of 37-30. Stalock took the loss and stopped 33 of 37 shots he faced for the Sharks.
The Pirates get back to the ice tomorrow when they face off against the Providence Bruins on Kent Hulst Bobblehead night at the Cumberland County Civic Center, presented by Bath Savings Institution. Puck drop is at 7:00, and the game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
