Pirates Host Sharks for Military Appreciation Night

11/08/2013 9:03 AM -

Lewiston, ME – The Portland Pirates will look for their first home win of the season when they face the Worcester Sharks on Friday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Puck drops at 7 PM for Military Appreciation Night as the Pirates honor veterans, active duty military, and their families throughout the night.

The Pirates last played a week ago, dropping a 4-2 decision to the St. John’s IceCaps. Brendan Shinnimin scored twice to lead the Pirates offense, but 3 first period goals for the IceCaps proved to be too much for the Pirates to overcome. Louis Domingue made his second appearance for the Pirates, again in relief of Mark Visentin, and stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced over the final two periods.

Worcester also faced off against the IceCaps in their last contest, winning a 3-0 decision behind rookie goaltender Troy Grosenick’s first career AHL shootout in just his second professional start. Grosenick made 27 saves overall while Sena Acolatse, Curt Gogol, and Danill Tarasov provided the goals for the Sharks.

The Pirates have faces the Sharks once this season, a 3-2 defeat in Worcester in their first road game of the season. Andy Miele scored twice for Portland while Mike Lee made 28 saves, but the Sharks got a pair of goals from Bracken Kearns to go with Danill Tarasov’s game winner in the second period. Troy Grosenick made the start for the Sharks, stopping 30 of 32 shots for his first professional victory in his first professional start.

Key Bank Key to the Game
Home Ice Advantage: The Pirates must take advantage of the home crowd, as they have yet to win at home this season (0-4-0-1). An early goal and high intensity throughout the first period will get the Pirates faithful into the game and give the team the home ice advantage that they’ll need throughout the season.

The Pirates will celebrate Military Appreciation Night tonight and will wear special camouflage jerseys to honor veterans and active duty military members. Members of the military will be honored throughout the game, and can obtain a $10 day of game ticket at the box office with valid military ID. A portion of the Military Appreciation Ticket Packs sold prior to tonight’s game will be donated to the Wounded Heroes Program of Maine.

Tonight’s game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
