Pirates Power Past Sound Tigers in Overtime

 Pirates defensemen David Rundblad scored the game winning power play goal 3:14 into overtime and Chad Johnson made 28 saves in his first game back from injury as the Portland Pirates defeated  the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2.

The game remained scoreless until 14:26 left in the third period when Alexandre Bolduc scored his team high 13th goal of the season. Bolduc’s goal gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead, but the Sound Tigers were able to tie it up with 11:35 left in the third when Nino Niederreiter put a rebound past Johnson off a Colin McDonald shot on the power play. The goal was Niederreiter’s 12th of the year. Neither team capitalized on their power play opportunities in the remaining minutes, forcing the game into overtime.
The Pirates started the extra frame with the man advantage, but failed to convert that opportunity. However, the Sound Tigers Brock Nelson was calledforhigh sticking 1:41 into overtime, and the Pirates cashed in. David Rundblad took a wrist shot from just inside the blue line to beat Anders Nilsson high glove side to give the Pirates the 2-1 victory at the 3:14 mark of the extra frame. It was the Pirates’ second consecutive win, 4th consecutive win in extra time, and their third overtime victory in a row.
The Pirates improve to 12-10-1-1 on the year, with Johnson getting his 8th win of the year after stopping 28 of the 29 shots he faced. Bridgeport falls to 11-12-0-1, with Nilsson getting the loss after stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced.
The Pirates get back to action on Friday when they face the Manchester Monarchs in Lewiston at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée. Puck drops at 7 PM. It will be the 5th installment of the VIP Cup series win, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, and Service, The winner of the game will take a 3-2 advantage in the VIP Cup standings.
