Pirates in the NHL

Since 1993, the Portland Pirates have produced hundreds of players that have become NHL stars. Currently, there are 45 former Pirates in the NHL today, playing for 18 different teams. Here is a brief look at each of the former Pirates in alphabetical order:

Krys Barch
Current team: Florida Panthers
Barch played for parts of four seasons with the Pirates in the early 2000’s. In 141 games for Portland, Barch racked up 14 goals, 30 assists, 44 points and 168 penalty minutes. With the Panthers so far this season, Barch has 3 assists in 34 games played with 62 penalty minutes.

Troy Bodie
Current team: Toronto Maple Leafs
Bodie is a five year NHL veteran, who appeared in five games for the Pirates in 2012-13, tallying three goals and adding an assist for four points. He has spent time with the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and is a current member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. So far in 2013-14 with the Leafs, Bodie has played in 20 games and scored two goals and three assists while adding 17 penalty minutes.

Chris Butler
Current team: Calgary Flames
Butler spent 27 games with the Pirates in 2008-09, recording two goals and 10 assists for 12 points. This is Butler’s sixth NHL season, spending time with the Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames. This season with the Flames, Butler has two goals, six assists and eight points in 53 games.

Paul Byron
Current team: Calgary Flames
Byron was with the Pirates in 2010-11, totaling 53 points (26g, 27a) in 67 games, with ten power play goals and three shorthanded goals. This year with the Flames, Byron has two goals, eight assists and ten points in 26 games.

Ryan Carter
Current team: New Jersey Devils
Carter played a total of 89 games with the Pirates in parts of two seasons starting in 2006-07. He registered 41 points (19g, 22a) during his time in Portland and has spent 10 seasons in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils. In 37 games in 2013-14, Carter has four goals and two assists for the Devils.

Kyle Chipchura
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
The 27-year-old Chipchura spent eight games with the Pirates in 2011-12, scoring four goals and two assists. He is in his eighth NHL season, having spent time with the Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks and Phoenix Coyotes, and has nine points so far this year for the Coyotes.

Daniel Cleary
Current team: Detroit Red Wings
Cleary played for the Pirates in 1998-99, appearing in 30 games and recording nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points. He has spent his last nine years with the Red Wings but has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers and Phoenix Coyotes. In 52 games this season, Clearly has four goals, four assists and eight points.

Chris Conner
Current team: Pittsburgh Penguins
In 60 games with Portland in 2012-13, Conner had 13 goals, 27 assists and 40 points, including four game-winning goals. With the Penguins this year, Conner has four goals and an assist in 19 games.

Andrew Ebbett
Current team: Pittsburgh Penguins
In 2007-08, Ebbet had 18 goals and 54 assists for the Pirates for 72 points in 74 games. In parts of nine NHL season, he has been with the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, Phoenix Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. This season, he has one assist in six games in Pittsburgh.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Ekman-Larsson is one of the youngest former Pirates in the NHL today. Last season in 20 games with Portland, OEL had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points and had a plus/minus of +5. This is his fourth season with the Phoenix Coyotes, where he has scored 25 goals and 70 assists in 229 NHL games. This season, he has eight goals and 20 assists through 51 games and will make his first Olympic appearance for his native Sweden in February.

Matt Ellis
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
Ellis played for the Pirates in 2008-09 and 2010-11, appearing in 64 games and registering 35 points. This season with the Sabres, Ellis has three goals, two assists and five points in 20 games.

Tyler Ennis
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
Ennis played for the Pirates in 2009-10, scoring 23 goals and 42 assists for 65 points in 69 games. He has spent all five of his NHL seasons with the Sabres and has 11 goals and 14 assists this year for Buffalo in 52 games.

Jonas Enroth
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
Another current Sabres player, Enroth spent parts of three seasons for the Pirates. From 2008-11, Enroth won 68 games for the Pirates while racking up a .915 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average. His best season with the Pirates was in 2009-10 when he went 28-18-1 with a 2.37 goals against average and .919 save percentage. With the Sabres this year, Enroth is 1-10-5 with a 2.80 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. He will make his first Olympic appearance this year with Sweden.

Tomas Fleischmann
Current team: Florida Panthers
Fleishmann played 53 games with the Pirates in 2004-05, scoring seven goals and adding 12 assists for 19 points. In 52 games with the Panthers this season, Fleischmann has 23 points (5g, 18a).

Nathan Gerbe
Current team: Carolina Hurricanes
Gerbe spent parts of two seasons with the Pirates from 2008-10, appearing in 101 games. In that time, he had 41 goals and 53 assists for 94 points. So far, Gerbe has 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points for the Hurricanes.

Ryan Getzlaf
Current team: Anaheim Ducks
Getzlaf almost managed two points per game when he played for the Pirates in 2005-06, scoring eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 17 games played. This is his ninth NHL season, all spent with Anaheim, where he has become the team’s captain and one of their leading stars, racking up 582 points (177 goals, 405 assists) since coming into the NHL. This season, he has 25 goals and 36 assists for 61 points (third in the NHL) in 51 games for the Ducks and will make his second straight Olympic appearance for Canada in February.

Curtis Glenncross
Current team: Calgary Flames
Glenncross was with Portland for part of the 2006-07 season, playing in 31 games and scoring six goals and ten assists for 16 points. This season with Calgary, he has six goals and six assists for 12 points in 21 games played.

Sergei Gonchar
Current team: Dallas Stars
Gonchar suited up in 61 games for the Pirates in 1994-95, scoring ten goals and 32 assists for 42 points. He has played in 20 NHL seasons with the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars. He has played in four Olympics for Russia and has 793 career NHL points (219 g, 574a) with two goals and 16 assists this year for the Stars.

Boyd Gordon
Current team: Edmonton Oilers
Gordon spent time in Portland from 2003-05, playing in 123 games while amassing 22 goals and 39 assists for 61 points. In 50 games with the Oilers this season, Gordon has eight goals and nine assists for 17 points.

Jeff Halpern
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Halpern played in six games for the Pirates in the 1998-99 season, tallying three points. This season with the Coyotes, Halpern has two goals and five assists for seven points in 40 games.

Jonas Hiller
Current team: Anaheim Ducks
Hiller only played six games for the Pirates in 2007-08 but turned out some impressive numbers—a 3-2-1 record, a .929 save percentage and a 2.11 goals against average. This year with the Ducks, Hiller has 24 wins with a .914 save percentage and a 2.39 goals against average and will make his second Olympic appearance for Switzerland in Sochi.

Chad Johnson
Current team: Boston Bruins
Johnson was with the Pirates for the 2012-13 season, turning in 16 wins with a .903 save percentage and a 3.00 goals against average. This year with the Bruins, Johnson has nine wins with a .918 save percentage and a 2.30 goals against average.

Tim Kennedy
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Kennedy has had two stints with the Pirates. In 2008-09, he played in 73 games, scoring 18 goals and 49 assists for 67 points while adding two more assists at the beginning of the 2013-14 season. So far with the Coyotes this season, Kennedy has appeared in 34 games and scored two goals and six assists for eight points.

Rob Klinkhammer
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Klinkhammer appeared in 53 games for the Pirates in 2012-13, scoring 14 goals and 30 assists for 40 points. This season with the Coyotes, the 27-year-old has nine goals and eight assists for 17 points.

Zenon Konopka
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
Konopka is a former captain of the Pirates that spent parts of two seasons with the Pirates from 2005-07. In 76 games, Konopka scored 29 goals and 50 assists for 79 points while adding 29 points (11g, 18a) in 19 playoff games. Konopka started 2013-14 with the Minnesota Wild before being traded to the Sabres this season and has three points on the year, one goal and one assist in 36 games with the Wild and one assist in ten games for the Sabres.

Michael Kostka
Current team: Chicago Blackhawks
Kostka was with the Pirates from 2008-10, appearing in 156 games and scoring six goals and 51 assists for 57 points. He also added one assist in eight playoff games for Portland. This season with the Blackhawks, the 28-year-old defenseman has two goals and one assists in nine games.

Chris Kunitz
Current team: Pittsburgh Penguins
Kunitz spent five games in a Pirates uniform in 2005-06, tallying four assists. So far in 2013-14, Kunitz has 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points in 53 games and will make his first Olympic appearance for Canada next month.

Brooks Laich
Current team: Washington Capitals
Laich played 90 games for the Pirates from 2003-05 scoring 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points. This year with the Capitals, he has five goals and four assists for nine points in 39 games played.

Cody McCormick
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
In 2009-10, McCormick played 66 games for the Pirates, scoring 17 goals and 12 assists for 29 points. With the Sabres this year, the 30-year-old forward has one goal and four assists for five points in 25 games.

Curtis McElhinney
Current team: Columbus Blue Jackets
McElhinney played in 25 games for the Pirates in 2011-12, winning 10 games while posting a .907 save percentage and a 3.04 goals against average. This year with the Blue Jackets, he has played in 22 games and won eight of them with a .908 save percentage and a 2.80 goals against average.

Drew Miller
Current team: Detroit Red Wings
Miller played for Portland from 2006-08, appearing in 110 games while amassing 72 points (32g, 40a). He also had one goal and seven assists in 16 playoff games during the 2007-08 season with 12 PIM. In 2013-14 with the Red Wings, Miller has five goals and five assists for ten points in 53 games played.

Connor Murphy
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Murphy is just 20-years-old but is making a name for himself on the Phoenix blue line. He started this season with the Pirates before being called up by the Coyotes and has since split time between the two. With the Pirates, Murphy has registered seven assists in 18 games played while having a plus/minus of -1. In 22 games with Phoenix, Murphy has one goal and seven assists or eight points with a plus/minus of +4.

PA Parenteau
Current team: Colorado Avalanche
Parenteau played in 84 games for the Pirates from 2005-07 scoring 37 goals and 40 assists for 77 points. Through 41 games with the Avalanche this season, Parenteau has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points.

Dustin Penner
Current team: Anaheim Ducks
Penner was with the Pirates during the 2005-06 season, racking up 39 goals and 45 assists for 84 points in 57 games with a plus/minus of +41, 13 power play goals and four game-winners. He added another seven points in five playoff games that year. This season with the Ducks, Penner has 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points in 43 games.

Corey Perry
Current team: Anaheim Ducks
Perry played in 19 games for the Pirates in 2005-06, scoring 16 goals and 18 assists for 34 points while adding one goal in one playoff game that season. In 55 games with the Ducks this season, Perry has totaled 28 goals (second in the NHL) and 30 assists for 58 points (fifth in the NHL). He will be making his second Olympic appearance for Canada in February.

Rich Peverly
Current team: Dallas Stars
Peverly only played in one game for the Pirates in 2004-05, registering no points. This year with the Stars, the forward has seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points in 52 games.

Aaron Rome
Current team: Dallas Stars
Rome spent part of three seasons with the Pirates starting in 2005. In all, the defenseman played in 156 games and scoring 54 points (15g, 39a) with a combined plus/minus rating of +20 and 257 PIM. He added one goal and four assists in 18 playoff games during 2005-06 with 33 PIM. He has played in 15 games for the stars this season registering one assist.

David Runblad
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Runblad was with the Pirates from 2011-13, appearing in 80 games while tallying 16 goals and 39 assists for 55 points with ten of his goals coming on the power play. He also registered one goal in three playoff games for Portland last season. So far in 2013-14, Runblad has played in 12 games for the Coyotes with one assist.

Bobby Ryan
Current team: Ottawa Senators
Ryan’s first stint with the Pirates came during the playoffs in 2005-06 where he recorded eight points in 19 games. The next season, he appeared in eight games for Portland, scoring three goals and six assists for nine points. In 2007-08, he suited up for 48 games scoring 21 goals and 28 assists for 49 points while adding 20 points (8g, 12a) in 16 playoff games that season. This year with the Senators, Ryan has 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points in 53 games.

Alexander Semin
Current team: Carolina Hurricanes
Semin appeared in just four games for the Pirates in the 2003-04 season, scoring three goals and an assist for four points. In 41 games with the Hurricanes this year, he has 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points and will represent the host-country, Russia, for the second time at the Olympics.

Ladislav Smid
Current team: Calgary Flames
Smid was with the Pirates for the 2005-06 season, playing in 71 games and scoring three goals and 25 assists for 28 points. With the Flames this season, he has appeared in 35 games and recorded one assist and will make his first Olympic appearance with the Czech Republic.

Michael Stone
Current team: Phoenix Coyotes
Like Runblad, Stone played for the Pirates from 2011-13. He played in 87 games, scoring 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points and was a combined +10 overall. He added one assists in one playoff game in 2012-13. He has appeared in 45 games for the Coyotes this season, scoring eight goals and six assists for 14 points.

Shawn Thornton
Current team: Boston Bruins
Like Konopka, Thornton is a former captain of the Pirates. He played in 15 games for the Pirates in 2006-07, recording four goals and four assists for eight points to go along with 55 PIM. This season with the Bruins, he has four goals and one assist for five points and 48 PIM.

Corey Tropp
Current team: Columbus Blue Jackets
Tropp played one season for the Pirates in 2010-11, appearing in 76 games and registering ten goals and 30 assists for 40 points and 113 PIM. He added two goals and five assists in 12 playoff games that season. This year with the Blue Jackets, he has two goals and six assists for eight points in 26 games.

Michael Weber
Current team: Buffalo Sabres
Weber played two seasons with the Pirates from 2008-10, suiting up for 122 games and recording six goals and 23 assists for 29 points with a combined plus/minus rating of +23 and 247 PIM. He added one goal in four playoff games with the team in the 2009-10 season. This season with the Sabres, Weber has two assists through 38 games.
