Saco, ME – The Portland Pirates today announced the signings of defensemen Evan Oberg and Jordon Southorn. Oberg has been signed to a one-way AHL contract and Southorn agreed to a two-way AHL deal.

Oberg, a 26 year-old Forestberg, Alberta native, is entering his sixth professional season. The 6-foot-1, 191 pound defenseman has spent the majority of his career in the American Hockey League, playing a total of 283 games. Over his AHL career, Oberg has a scoring total of 23-75-98 with a +8 rating.

He has also played a total of 34 Calder Cup Playoff games, scoring 3-9-12, which includes 2-8-10 in 18 games with the 2012 Calder Cup Champion Norfolk Admirals.

“Evan is a player who can play in all situations,” said Pirates General Manager and Head Coach, Ray Edwards. “He’s a quiet leader. He’s won a championship and is a guy who played in the playoffs every year. We feel he can bring quality to our team in another player with the potential to reach the next level.”

Last season, Oberg played 60 games for the Chicago Wolves, totaling 6-19-25 with a +22 rating. He has also played for the AHL’s Manitoba Moose (2009-11), Rochester Americans (2011), San Antonio Rampage (2011), Norfolk (2011-12), and Syracuse Crunch (2012-13).

Oberg has played a total of seven games in the National Hockey League; four with the Vancouver Canucks (2009-11) and three with the Tampa Bay Lightning (2011-12). Prior to turning pro, he played two seasons of NCAA hockey with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (2007-09).

Southorn, a 24 year-old Montreal, Quebec native, will begin his fifth professional season in 2014-15. The 6-foot-3, 200 pound defenseman has played the majority of his career in the ECHL, totaling 205 regular season games, scoring 32-68-100 with a +27 rating over that time.

He has also played 20 ECHL playoff games over his career, with a score line of 3-4-7.

Southorn’s ECHL totals last season were 13-23-36 in 56 games split between the Fort Wayne Komets (53 games) and the Elmira Jackals (three games). He has also played in the ECHL for the Trenton Devils/Titans (2010-11) and the Wheeling Nailers (2011-12).

Southorn has only played three career games in the AHL. One of them came last season with Portland while on a professional tryout contract. He registered two assists, the first two points of his AHL career, in a 7-4 win over the St. John’s IceCaps at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland on March 14.

“Jordon has been one of the best players in the ECHL for the last two seasons,” Edwards said. “From his tryout with us last year, we could tell he had the ability to play in the AHL. He’s a big guy with a good shot who can really help our power play. Jordon will help provide us with the depth we need to be a winning team this season.”

Prior to last season, Southorn, a Buffalo Sabres fourth round draft pick in 2008, played in two games with the Providence Bruins during the 2011-12 season. Before he turned pro, Southorn played four seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Prince Edward Island Rocket (2006-10). His two-way AHL contract will allow him to play with Portland or with the Gwinnett Gladiators, the Pirates’ ECHL affiliate, next season.
