Brett Hextall Named Portland Pirates IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year
Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that Brett Hextall has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Portland community during the 2012-13 season.
Hextall has been a team leader both on and off the ice during his two seasons in Portland. A fan favorite since his arrival, Hextall has displayed a great commitment to Portland’s fans, often staying late after practice or games to sign personalized autographs. Hextall’s popularity with Pirates fans only increased after the release of his “Hextall Style” video at the beginning of the 2012-13 season.
In his two years with the Pirates, Hextall has taken part in a number of community activities, including a hospital visit to deliver free season tickets and every Pirates postgame event since his arrival in Portland. Hextall has also used his personal time this season to advocate for a number of charitable causes using his status as a professional athlete to raise awareness for those suffering from mental illness and depression.
Hextall is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL’s 2012-13 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League on Apr. 18.
Tickets are still available for all 3 remaining regular season Pirates games at the Cumberland County Civic Center! For tickets, call (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or go online at ticketmaster.com.
