Pirates Finish Off Falcons in OT

Portland, Maine- The Portland Pirates defeated the Springfield Falcons in a wild, come from behind overtime game by a score of 6-5 on Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the game winner just 19 seconds into the bonus frame for the Pirates victory.

The scoring opened up just past the halfway point of the 1st period when the Pirates defense overcommitted and sprung John Moore on a three on one. Moore took a feed from Dalton Smith in the slot and slapped it by Chad Johnson for his 3rd goal of the season to give Springfield the 1-0 advantage. Less than two minutes later, Jonathan Audy-Marchessault took a pass from Nick Drazenovic and slapped it top shelf on Johnson, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead that they would take to the first intermission.
The second period was a wild one, with 8 total goals and numerous penalties. Portland got on the board just 28 seconds in the period, when Alexander Bolduc took a Jordan Szwarz feed and slapped it past Falcons’ goaltender Curtis McElhinney for his 10th goal of the season. Less than a minute later the Falcons answered, withDavid Savard getting the strike for Springfield to give them another 2 goal advantage. Cam Atkinson would extend the Falcon’s lead, finishing stick side on Johnson for the 4-1 lead. Johnson, who had struggled throughout the night, was pulled for Mark Visentin at the 4:12 make of the 2nd, following the 4th goal.
Portland would have a major comeback.
Portland was on the power play when Mike Stone found the back of the net6:45 into the second period on a wrist shot past McElhenney. Exactly 2 minutes later the Pirates would strike again on a 5 on 3 power play, with Bolduc scoring his 2ndof the game, and AHL leading 11thgoal on the year. Still on the power play, Chris Brown took another Andy Miele pass put it by McElhinney to tie the tie the game at 4 apiece. Portland wasn’t done on the power play, as Stone took advantage with 13:18 gone in the 2nd, chasing McElhinney and giving Portland their first lead of the night.Just before the end of the period however, the Falcons would tie the game back up, with Sean Collins scoring the equalizer on Visentin
The game was scoreless through the third, and the game headed to overtime, where Ekman-Larsson would strike off a Miele rebound, scoring on Springfield backup Paul Dainton to seal the victory for the Pirates. Ekman-Larsson’s goal was his 4th of the season, and gave Miele 4 assists on the night.
Pirates improved to 7-7-1-1 with Mark Visentin picking up the win in relief of Johnson. Visentin stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced to improve to 2-2-1 on the year. The Falcons fell to 10-2-1-2 on the year, but remain atop the Northeast division.
The Pirates have a very quick turnaround, as they return to action tomorrow against the Worcester Sharks in Massachusetts. The puck drops at 7 pm and the game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
