The Portland Pirates get back to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Manchester to face the Monarchs The puck will drop at 3PM for the third game of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires and Service, with Manchester holding a 2-0 advantage.
The Pirates are coming off a Friday victory at home against the Springfield Falcons, which saw them come back from a 3 goal deficit to win 6-5 in overtime, and loss Saturday night which saw them fall to the Worcester by a 5-1 in a fight filled affair. In Saturday night’s contest, the Sharks and Pirates combined for 15 fighting majors and 143 penalty minutes, with the Sharks taking advantage by scoring 2 power play goals. David Rundblad had the lone Portland goal, his first of the year, in the loss.
Manchester faced the Springfield Falcons on Saturday night, scoring 3 goals in the first period en route to a 4-3 shootout victory. Monarchs’ goals were scored by Tanner Pearson, Nick Deslauriers, and Tyler Toffoli, with Manchester captain and former Lewiston Maineiac Marc-Andre Cliché getting the game winner in the shootout. Former Pirate Peter Mannino stopped 21 of the 21 shots he faced in the victory.
The last time these two teams met was on November 20th at the Cumberland County Civic Center, where Manchester defeated Portland by a 5-1 margin. Toffoli had a hat trick that he completed less than halfway through the game, with Stefan Legein and Slava Voynov adding tallies of their own. Evan Brophey supplied the only goal for the Pirates with less than a minute to go in the game. Manchester’s victory gave them a 2-0 lead in the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, and Service, which is a season long series between Portland and Manchester.
