Pirates Skate Pass Sharks

Lewiston, Maine –Chris Conner scored two goals and added two assists and Oliver Ekman- Larsson added two goals and an assist as the  Portland Pirates (1-1-0-0), defeated the Worcester Sharks(0-2-0-1) 7-4 in front of 3,737 fans at the Androscoggin Bank Collisée Friday night. The game was the first of six being play in the Colisée by the Pirates this season, and the first of two matchups between the Sharks and Pirates in Lewiston.
Portland took the lead just 1:52 into the game when Brett Hextall scored a shorthanded goal with the assist going to Alexandre Bolduc. It was Hextall’sfirst goal of the season.
The Pirates took a two goal lead when Maxim Goncharov hit Conner with a pass on a breakaway, beating Sharks goalie Alex Stalockbeat him low glove side. It was Conner’s first professional goal with Ethan Werekand Goncharov credited with assists.
Worcester cut the lead to one on the powerplay when Sebastian Stalberg beat Pirates rookie goalie Mark Visentinthrough the five hole 11:39 into the first period. It was Stalberg third goal of the season, with assists going to Matt Irwin and Matt Tennyson.
The Sharks tied the game at two when SenaAcolaste scored on the powerplay with assists going to Jon Matsumoto and Stalock with 14:01 left in the first. It was Acolaste’s first goal of the season, and Worcester’s second poweplay goal of the night.
The Sharks took their first lead of the night just 44 seconds later when Yanni Gourde’s no angle shot from the corner bounced off Visentin’s shoulder for the goal. It was Gourde’s second goal of the season with the assist going to Freddy Hamilton.
However, The Sharks’ lead didn’t last long as the Pirates scored just 24 seconds later when on the power play Larsson scored with assists going to Chris Brown and Conner.
The Pirates open the second period with a goal 2:31 into the period when Andy Miele hit Conner with a along the boards to send him in on a breakaway, which Conner put pastStalock for his second goal of the game. Larsson also was credited with an assist, giving him
Portland took a 5-3 lead when Rob Klinkhammer pass the puck behind the net to Jordan Szwarz who then fired a pass out front to Bolduc who ripped a wrist shot to beat Stalock high stick side.
The Sharks pulled within one with a goal by Tim Kennedy with 6:18 left in the second period but The Pirates extended their lead when Larsson scored his second goal of the game with a shot from the point to beat Stalock
The Pirates took a 7-4 lead late in the third period when Conner found Andy Mielewho deked  the puck past Stalock to add a punctuation mark to the Pirate’s impressive victory.
Both Portland and Worcester had 29 shots on the day, with Stalock stopping 22 for the Sharks and Visentin stopping 25 for his first professional win. Portland went 1 -3 on the power play with Ekman-Larsson picking up the first powerplay goal on the year for the Pirates. Brett Hextall also supplied the first shorthanded goal for the Pirates this year.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow with a quick turnaround, as they travel to Manchester to face the Monarchs in the first game of the VIP Cup (www.vip-cup.com). Puck drops at 7 pm and the game can be heard on WPEI 95.5 FM and 95.9 FM as well as online through AHLive.
