The Portland Pirates bounced back from a disappointing Friday loss to defeat the Springfield Falcons by a score of 3-1 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Boris Valabik registered the game winning goal for Portland, the first of his Pirates career. The win keeps the Pirates just one point behind the Providence Bruins in the Atlantic Division.
The Pirates got the opening tally of the game, with Chris Brown tallying his 14th goal of the year 7:11 into the first. Brown’s goal, assisted by Mathieu Brodeur, gave him 25 points on the year, and gave the Pirates their first goal against Springfield since December 19th . The lead lasted until the 17:57 mark of the period, when Wade Macleod capitalized on an Evan Brophey penalty to tie the game. It was the first powerplay tally allowed by the Pirates in 11 penalty kills. Despite the Pirates outshooting the Falcons 13-4 in the period, the scored remain tied at 1 into the first intermission.
The Falcons would control possession in the first half of the second, but the Pirates would strike back with 17 shots in the period. Boris Valabik broke through with 5:01 left in the second, sending a howitzer of a slap shot off the faceoff past Curtis McElhinney. Andy Miele and Michael Stone picked up assists on Valabik’s first Pirates goal, and the Pirates took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
In the third, Rob Klinkhammer added an insurance goal, tallying his 13th goal of the year at the 8:37 mark. Stone picked up his second assist of the night and Jordan Szwarz was credited with an assist as well. From there, goaltender Mike Lee shined for the Pirates, finishing off the game by helping kill a Springfield six on four power play with less than 2 minutes in regulation and Falcons goaltender McElhinney pulled.
The Pirates improve to 29-18-1-1 on the season, registering their 60th point of the year. They remain in 5th place in the Eastern Conference, 4 points back of the Syracuse Crunch. Mike Lee remains perfect in his AHL career, winning his 4th straight decision and third career start after stopping 27 of 29 shots. The Falcons fallto 29-12-4-3 on the year.
The Pirates return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisée tomorrow afternoon to face the St. John’s IceCaps for the final regular season game in Lewiston.
