11/16/2013 9:00 AM -

Lewiston, ME – The Portland Pirates go for their fourth straight win, and third straight at home, when they face the Springfield Falcons for the first time of the 2013-14 season. Faceoff is set for 7:00 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

The Pirates defeated the Manchester Monarchs last night 4-1 to tie the VIP Cup Series presented by VIP Tires & Service at one game apiece. Gilbert Brule, Randy Jones, Tobias Rieder, and Chris Summers scored for the Pirates, while Mark Visentin made 24 saves in his 7th straight start. Jones and Summers’ goals were the first goals from the Pirates defense this season, while Rieder’s was his 5th goal in 4 professional games and 3rd power play goal of the season.

Springfield defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-1 last night behind two Blake Parlett power play goals. Jack Skille had the other Falcon’s tally, while Jeremy Smith made 21 saves on 21 shots in the victory. The Falcons lead the Northeast Division with a 9-3-0-1 record and have the second ranked penalty kill in the AHL at 89.3%, including 7 penalty kills last night. The Falcons also racked up 4 fighting majors against the Sound Tigers and a total of 34 penalty minutes.

Key Bank Key to the Game
Tobi Terrific: Tobias Rieder is off to one of the hottest starts in Pirates history, scoring 5 goals in 4 games. Good things happen when the Pirates get the puck to the rookie forward, so the Pirates will look to ride the hot hand and get Rieder involved in the scoring.

This is the first of 6 meetings this year between the Pirates and Falcons after the two teams split the season series last year. The Falcons were victorious in their last meeting of the year, a 4-2 win on April 7th despite two Andy Miele power play goals. The Falcons and Pirates have never played each other at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

Tonight’s game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
