Player Profile: Chris Brown

Chris Brown was drafted 36th overall in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. The 6’2 forward stood out to Phoenix after an impressive 2008-2009 season with the U.S. National Under-18 team. In 62 games that year Brown tallied 20 goals along with 18 assists for a total of 38 points.

After the Coyotes drafted Brown at the end of the 2009 season, he spent three years at the University of Michigan. As a Wolverine, Brown put together 3 solid seasons finishing with point totals of 28 (2009-2010), 23 (2010-2011), and 29 (2011-2012). While in Ann Arbor, Brown said that he learned so much about himself as a hockey player under legendary head coach Gordon “Red” Berenson.
“As far as Red Berenson goes, he’s a living legend in the game of hockey. It was an honor to play for him and to represent my school there, as it was something that I dreamed of as a little kid, and I got to achieve that dream.
During his time with the U.S. National Under-18 team and the University of Michigan, Brown played with a number of very talented players. The talented list includes, Cam Fowler, Kyle Palmieri, and Carl Hagelin. All three are currently on NHL rosters, Fowler and Palmieri are with the Anaheim Ducks, and Hagelin is with the New York Rangers. Brown said that it was these teammates along with others that also helped him improve himself as a player.
“I played with Carl for 2 years, and he is definitely the fastest player I have ever played with. He made me keep up with him a lot. I’ve had great teammates over the years, and many have excelled, some are playing in the NHL now and some are playing here with me.”
Brown is off to a solid start this season for the Pirates, with 4 goals and 8 assists for a total of 12 points in his first 16 games. He has also appeared in 5 games for Phoenix. Twice so far this year Brown has been called up to the big club, and then sent back to Maine shortly after. While this may seem frustrating, Brown says that he just needs to keep improving his game and his time will come.
“It’s a privilege to get called up and play with Phoenix. You just roll with the punches and take everything that you can get and learn from the experiences with the coaches and what the management has to say. You also just have to enjoy it, that’s all you can really do. Then when you come back here, you work on the things that they talk about, and try and work your way back up."
