Olympic rosters were finalized on Tuesday and seven former Pirates were chosen to represent their respective countries. In all, Pirates alumni will play for four different countries at the Sochi Games in February. The most recent Pirate to be chosen was defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, currently playing for the Phoenix Coyotes.
The complete list of former Pirates that will participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics is below in alphabetical order:
Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Defense, Sweden): Ekman-Larsson appeared in 20 games for Portland in the 2012-13 season, racking up seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points. This season with Phoenix, he has 22 points in 40 games and has 89 points (21g, 68a) in four seasons with the Coyotes. This will be his first Olympic appearance.
Jhonas Enroth (Goalie, Sweden): Enroth played in parts of three seasons for the Pirates from 2008-2011. In all, Enroth had 68 wins with Portland to go along with a 2.64 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. Playing with the Buffalo Sabres in 2013-14, Enroth is 1-8-3 with a 2.60 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. This will be his first Olympic appearance.
Ryan Getzlaf (Center, Canada): The captain of the Anaheim Ducks played 17 games in Portland, registering eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 2005-06. The nine-year veteran leads the Ducks in both assists (29) and points (49) and will make his second Olympic appearance.
Jonas Hiller (Goalie, Switzerland): Hiller played in six games for the Pirates in 2007-08, posting a 2.11 goals against average and a .929 save percentage while going 3-2-1. In 30 games this season with the Ducks, Hiller has 21 wins, a 2.40 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. This will mark his second Olympic appearance.
Chris Kunitz (Left Wing, Canada): In 2005-06, Kunitz played five games with the Pirates, amassing four assists. In 12 NHL seasons, Kunitz has played for the Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins. This season with the Penguins, he ranks second on the team in goals (23) and points (48) and will make his first Olympic appearance.
Corey Perry (Right Wing, Canada): Perry played 19 games for the Pirates in 2005-06 registering 16 goals and 18 assists for 34 points. This season with the Ducks, Perry is first in goals (24) and second in points (46) and will make his second Olympic appearance.
Ladislav Smid (Defense, Czech Republic): Smid played in 71 games for the Pirates in the 2005-06 season, totaling three goals and 25 assists for 28 points. He has played for the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames in the NHL. With the Flames this season, Smid has one assist in 26 games played. This will be his first Olympic appearance.
