Portland Pirates to Honor Three Local Hockey Heroes as part of USA Hockey’s Hockey Weekend Across America, Presented by CCM
Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates today announced the three Local Hockey Heroes that will be honored as part of USA Hockey’s Hockey Weekend Across America during Sunday’s game against the St. John’s IceCaps at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston. The honorees will be Cindy Schlaepfer, Frank O’Connell, and Don Boucher.
Hockey Weekend Across America is in its 6th year nationally. Friday is Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey Day, sponsored by ShopUSAHockey.com, Saturday is Try Hockey Day sponsored by the National Hockey League, and Sunday is Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes day.
Cindy Schlaepfer was an outstanding hockey player herself and played women's hockey at Cornell University. Cindy took over the Western Maine Youth Hockey girls hockey team and developed it into a strong, well-coached team that went from never winning a game to an impressive 10-10-1 season last year. Cindy challenged the Western Maine Youth Hockey girls to be better and to have fun playing hockey most of all. She loves the sport of hockey and has been involved with every level with Western Maine Youth Hockey from Learn to Play all the way up to becoming a board member and eventually the vice president of Western Maine Youth Hockey.
Frank O’Connell has been a hockey fan in Lewiston for 67 years, sitting in Section 5, Row C, Seat 3 at the Colisée for the last 40 years. Frank attends all Lewiston Hockey games, from Lewiston vs. St. Dominic’s high school games, up to Portland Pirates AHL games, with all of the Lewiston MAINEiac games in between. He has supported his family in hockey and watched his sons, grandsons, and even great grandsons grow up enjoying the game
Don Boucher was the head coach of the St. Dominic’s Girls team. Don passed away last year from cancer. Don was an outstanding coach who was revered by his players, coaching the St. Dom’s High School Girls to the 2011 Girls Ice Hockey Championship. Don played hockey all through high school in Lewiston and coached many years of Rousseau clinics as well as various levels of youth hockey in the Lewiston area. Don positively impacted countless hockey players through his coaching including his own kids. His daughter Kasey is currently a defenseman at Boston University.
On Sunday, the Portland Pirates will play their final regular season game at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée when they take on division rival St. John’s for the 4th time this season. The puck will drop at 4 pm for the first Sunday matinee of the season. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the Colisée early to tailgate prior to the game!
