Prospect Profile: Mike Card

What would Mike Card be doing if he wasn't a professional hockey player? Well, according to the 22-year-old defenseman, he would work for management at a resort. The Kitchener, Ontario native won't be looking for that resort job anytime soon, after being chosen as the Sabres eighth round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Card signed with the Sabres in June of 2006, after playing four seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.

"A talented two-way defenseman, Mike Card is proficient at both ends of the rink. Very skilled with the puck, Card possesses a very good pass out of the zone, and a good shot when he uses it. Mike is a very good skater, with an effortless stride, quick acceleration, and good top speed. He won’t hesitate to join the rush without risking too much defensively." (Hockeysfuture.com)

Card's 2007-2008 season got off to a promising start when he scored the game-winning goal in Rochester's 6-4 home opener win against Syracuse on October 5th. Unfortunately, he suffered injuries that would keep him off the ice for much of the remainder of the season.

After starting the 2006-2007 season with Rochester, Card made his NHL debut with the Sabres in Philadelphia on November 11th, and played a four-game stint with Buffalo. Card completed the season with nine points and also played six games for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.

In his 2005-2006 season with Kelowna, Card finished with 55 points (12 goals and 43 assists), ranking him third in points among WHL defensemen. He helped lead the Rockets to three straight Memorial Cup appearances from 2003-2005. Card completed his WHL career with 147 points (35 goals and 112 assists).
