BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Brian Pothier scored during a two-man advantage in overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night in the preseason opener for both.
Buffalo, which had not been assessed a penalty until 39 seconds remained in regulation, incurred two in a span of 25 seconds to set up the overtime power play. Pothier fired a slap shot from the center point past Buffalo goalie Jhonas Enroth.

The Portland Pirates will play a pair of home pre-season games in preparation for the 2009-10 American Hockey League Regular Season. The exhibition schedule beings Saturday, September 26th when the Lowell Devils visit the Portland Ice Arena for a 5 p.m. start. The Pirates will also take on the University of New Brunswick Reds at the Portland Ice Arena on Wednesday, September 30th at 7 p.m.

In addition to the two exhibition games at the Portland Ice Arena, the Pirates will take on the Manchester Monarchs at 2 p.m. at the Notre Dame Arena in Berlin, NH on Sunday, September 27th.

The Pirates open the 2009-2010 American Hockey League regular season with a pair of road games. Saturday, October 3rd the Pirates will be in Springfield to meet the Falcons followed by a Friday, October 9th game against the River Rats in Albany.
