Ray Edwards

Head Coach/General Manager

Edwards returns for his third season as Head Coach of the Portland Pirates and his fifth season as a Head Coach in the AHL. Last season, Edwards coached the Pirates to a 41-30-3-2 record, good enough for 6th place in the Eastern Conference and a playoff berth for the first time since 2010-11. Despite the Pirates defeat in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to the Syracuse Crunch, Edwards’ team was one of the highest scoring teams in the AHL last season, scoring 230 goals (2nd in the Eastern Conference). Prior to his time with the Pirates, Edwards spent the two seasons with the San Antonio Rampage, recording a 70-56-7-9 record after joined San Antonio as an assistant coach on August 21, 2007. A native of Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Edwards began his coaching career at the age of 28 as one of the youngest coaches in professional hockey when he took the reins of the ECHL’s Huntington Blizzard in 1998. As a player, he recorded 174 points (83 goals, 91 assists) and 1,253 penalty minutes in 309 games over seven seasons in the ECHL, and attended National Hockey League training camps with Los Angeles, Chicago, and Ottawa.
